Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the correlations among family support, self-esteem and self-care agency of elderly in welfare facility and their relation to provide information for nursing intervention in order to improve health behavior of elderly in welfare facility.

Methods : The participants for this study were 132 elders, over 65 at Region D and C. After explaining the purpose of the study, participants who signed the consent form were asked to complete family support, self-esteem and self-care agency measurement instrument questionnaire.

Results : Average score were 2.55¡¾0.46 for the family support, 2.64¡¾0.25 for the self-esteem, 3.24¡¾0.53 for the self-care agency. The relation of family support, self-esteem, self-care agency showed a significant positive correlation between family support and self-esteem(r£½.83, p£¼.001), between family support and self-care agency(r£½.72, p£¼.001), between self-esteem and self-care agency(r£½.76, p£¼.001).

Conclusion : The higher the family support and self-esteem of elderly people, the higher the self-care capacity of elderly
people. Therefore, the elderly should increase their self-care capacity by introducing nursing strategies that can increase family support and self-esteem.
